We recently reported on a research by Consumer Intelligence Research Partners which evaluated for how long Apple users were hanging on to their older iPhones.
Another fascinating angle of the research however was which were the most popular brand-new iPhone models in this period.
The research looked at iPhones were offering during Apples 3rd fiscal quarter (April through June).

Another positive trend is that Apple tape-recorded a substantial increase in sales through its own retail operations (both online and brick and mortar shops), while Best Buy and providers offered less units. Many iPhones (66% as of June 2021) are still offered through carriers, however.

CIRP estimates that as more people selected the iPhone 12 Pro Max as their next phone, the US-WARP increased to $869 in the April-June quarter, “significantly higher” than the same period in 2015, according to the experts.

Throughout the same duration last year the iPhone 11 series comprised 65% of sales. Indeed, the iPhone 11 matched the iPhone 12 Pro Max, the 2 very popular designs for the quarter at 23% market share each.
Apple no longer reports a typical market price, rather it concentrates on a “United States weighted retail average cost” (US-WARP).
On the other end of the spectrum, the least popular designs for the quarter were the iPhone 12 mini, and the iPhone XR. Each of that made up simply 5% of the individuals.
Among individuals surveyed, the iPhone 12 Pro Max and iPhone 11 designs were the very popular, both of which each comprised 23% of the share of iPhones acquired by participants of the survey. All 4 iPhone 12 models made up 63% of iPhones.
