AUSTIN (KXAN)– The Electric Dependability Council of Texas (ERCOT), which manages the circulation of about 90% of the power in Texas, is asking residents to save power through Friday as temperatures in the state surge.
Monday afternoon data from ERCOT indicates anticipated need may go beyond capability throughout peak heat hours in the afternoon, and its not anticipated to alter much throughout the week with temperature levels near 100 degrees.
” We will be carrying out an extensive analysis with generation owners to figure out why a lot of systems are out of service,” said ERCOT Vice President of Grid Planning and Operations Woody Rickerson. “This is unusual for this early in the summer season.”
The council states the power grid will likely be tighter due to a high number of forced generation interruptions.
February freeze fiasco
ERCOT has been under national examination given that the February winter season storm blackouts that left millions in the dark and in the cold for days. ERCOTs management– or mismanagement– of the crisis became near-universally acknowledged as a failure. With this judgment, came increasing attention on its management.
ERCOT states system was four minutes away from complete collapse during winter season storms
The fallout from the mass blackouts catalyzed a series of big modifications for the council: consisting of director resignations, a state examination, and the termination of President/CEO Bill Magness.
In May, the council said its seasonal report for the summer season revealed a low threat for emergency conditions from June through September, with the company saying it expects peak summertime energy demand of 77,144 megawatts.
Rickerson included at the time that the council cant control weather or required generation blackouts, but said ERCOT is “prepared to deploy the tools that are readily available to us to preserve a reputable electric system.”
