Summer is here in the northern hemisphere. Its a good time to go outdoors and take in some sunlight. A little vitamin D benefits everyone. When lots of schools run summer season enrichment programs that provide kids with some knowing activities that may not otherwise occur during the school year, this is also a time. For example, taking kids outside for science lessons. To that end, SciShow Kids has four recommendations for outside science lessons. In Fun Summer Science grownups and children can learn more about the science of bubbles, kites, ice cream, and solar energy. Each section consists of a description of the science and brief ideas and directions for a hands-on activity. Previously this year SciShow Kids launched a video about developing a solar oven. As you may expect, the video explains the science of utilizing solar energy and discusses the fundamentals of how to construct a solar oven. The video isnt quite comprehensive enough to be the only source that you or your trainees consult when building a solar oven. NASA, the United States Department of Energy, and the Lawrence Hall of Science all provide in-depth directions. NASA provides 2 sets of comprehensive, written directions for developing solar ovens. This set of instructions (link opens a PDF) was produced for trainees in 7th through 9th grade. This set of instructions (link opens a PDF) for building a solar oven was composed for 6th through 8th grade students and culminates with students trying to make smores with their ovens. Cooking With Sol (link opens a PDF) was released by the United States Department of Energy. It was composed for students in 5th through 8th grade to follow directions to create a solar oven. DIY Sun Science is a complimentary iPad app from The Lawrence Hall of Science. The app features instructions for hands-on lessons about the sun. The lessons are a mix of activities that students can do by themselves and activities that they need to do with adult guidance. All of the activities use typical household items. A few of the activities that you will discover in DIY Sun Science are measuring the sun, making UV detectors, detecting solar storms, and cooking with a solar oven.
