San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan admits he wasnt pleased about it when the Rams reached a deal to obtain Matthew Stafford this offseason, both because it made a department rival better and due to the fact that the 49ers believed they might make a relocation to land Stafford.
Appearing with Rams coach Sean McVay and Peter Schrager on the Flying Coach podcast, Shanahan said he was distressed when he discovered the Rams landed Stafford.
” That was frustrating,” Shanahan stated. “Everyone was informing me it was a possibility, and Stafford is the male. I studied him hard coming out of college, and we played versus him so we know how good he is.”
It was currently understood that the 49ers were one of several teams that showed interest in trading for Stafford, but Shanahan had not previously made clear how much he desired Stafford, and how dissatisfied he was when the Rams made an offer with the Lions. Shanahan stated the 49ers had been in touch with Staffords representative, Tom Condon, but didnt recognize that the Rams were so close to getting an offer done. Shanahan stated that on the night the Rams and Lions concurred to their deal, someone in the understand called him and informed him, “If you want Stafford you require to obtain him right now,” and then just minutes later on the news broke that the deal was done.
McVay stated he was as shocked as Shanahan was at how rapidly the Rams and Lions were able to make the arrangement, which sent out Stafford to the Rams for Jared Goff, two first-round picks and a third-round choice.
“If it makes you feel any better, it came together faster than I thought, too, Kyle,” McVay informed Shanahan.
Shanahan and the 49ers ultimately made a huge relocation for a quarterback and traded up in the draft to take Trey Lance, but if Stafford leads the Rams to a number of wins over the 49ers this year, Shanahan may see Stafford as the one who got away.
