As NASA continues to detect a computer system problem on the Hubble Space Telescope, engineers are preparing to turn on some of the observatorys backup hardware. The main computer on the age-old telescope shut down all of a sudden on June 13; since then, the operations group has been working to determine and troubleshoot the issue, which is turning out to be rather evasive. More than two weeks into the procedure and while continuing to work to identify the root cause of the concern, NASA is now preparing to possibly move the telescope to backup hardware, according to a statement launched on Wednesday (June 30). The backup computer hadnt been utilized considering that it left Earth up until engineers turned it on during tests about a week back, only to come across the same glitches that were bothering the main computer.Astronauts deployed the Hubble Space Telescope from the area shuttle bus Discover in 1990; the telescope has actually taken more than 1.5 million observations in the intervening 31 years.Email Meghan Bartels at mbartels@space.com or follow her on Twitter @meghanbartels.
