Oppo submitted a hallmark for the “Oppo M1” chip back in 2019. At the time it was assumed that this will be an in-house designed chipset as the company supposedly worked with engineers from MediaTek and Spreadtrum (aka Unisoc). Last year the business padded out that group with Qualcomm, HiSilicon and more MediaTek hires.

This consists of color correction, sharpening and much more complex treatments such as stacking. The better the processing, the better the final image quality, weve seen that tested a lot of times.

Now leakster Digital Chat Station reveals that the M1 chip is in fact a custom-made Image Signal Processor (ISP). ISPs are accountable for taking in the raw pixel information from the camera sensing unit and performing all the required steps to transform that to the last image or video frame.

Night mode and comparable are processed by the ISP

This ISP chip is the first item from the Project Mariana group (hence “M1”). This team apparently consists of engineers form sibling brands OnePlus and Realme, so its rather most likely that their phones will likewise include the M1 chip.

This does not indicate that Oppo doesnt have a custom chipset in the works. It and Xiaomi are reportedly working on 5G chipsets that are slated to arrive this year. Xiaomi already has a custom-made ISP, the Surge C1 chip, which was included in the Mi Mix Fold.

Google had its own customized ISP in older Pixels, though it recently switched to counting on just the hardware inside the Snapdragon chipsets. Oppo had actually been doing the same previously, but a custom chip will better match the companys focus on cam excellence.
