DR Bamidele Iwalokun, a medical scientist, on Thursday, condemned the use of tissue documents as sanitary pads by women, saying it might result in severe health complications.
Iwalokun, who is the Head, Immunology and Vaccinology Research Department, Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR), Yaba, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.
He said that some tissue documents were items of waste, and such tissue papers were not hygienic for draining pipes blood throughout menstruation.
” The habit of using tissue paper in type of sanitary napkins is a poor hygiene practice on the part of any lady.
” Because no health policy has supported the use of tissue paper as sanitary napkin, so its a bad behaviour and should not be embraced health wise.
” It does not have any credibility of usage. This should be a way of informing ladies that it brings a severe public health threat.
” The practice locations such females at danger of having infection which may travel through the vaginal area cavity and enter the blood stream, thereby having a major health effect,” Iwalokun said.

The scientist said that using tissue paper throughout menstruation might impact the reproductive organs that might cause other issues in life.
“Sometimes it may be chronic infections that might not offer major symptoms to necessitate going to the healthcare facility, however it is indirectly damaging the reproductive system or that pathway.
“One of them is the Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID), many women do not understand they have PID up until when concerns of infertility turn up and unattended PID is a major cause of infertility.
“It likewise depends on the pathogens that are coming from such paper, so it is important to recognize the kinds of pathogen that are isolated from such tissue papers.
“There should be a quality study that will show the numerous kinds of pathogens, in order to identify the type of damage it can trigger.
“However, ladies need to abstain from the practice of using tissue paper as sanitary pads, in order to avoid such health complications.
“Women should constantly embrace correct health at all times, particularly during the regular monthly menstrual duration,” he said.
