When I opened my phone today to scroll through the headlines, I found one name plastered all over: Simone Biles.

The 24-year old gymnast, considered by numerous the G.O.A.T. (Greatest of All Time) made the choice to withdraw from the group competitors at the worlds most prestigious athletic competitors earlier today.

Simply the other day, Biles took to Instagram to share the tension shes been feeling today. “I truly do seem like I have the weight of the world on my shoulders at times. I know I brush it off and make it appear like pressure does not affect me but damn often its tough,” the young gymnast confided in her post.

The reason? The state of her psychological health.

I dont understand you, but as somebody who struggles with anxiety myself, I am so darn pleased with you and grateful for your brave example..

Thank you for revealing the world what it suggests to prioritize mental health.

In todays team finals competition, Biles made the choice to go back from the event after faulting the landing of her vault. Her team went on to win the silver medal while Biles cheered them on from the sidelines.

Initial reports speculated that perhaps the gymnast had actually been physically hurt, she cleared the air in her post-competition interview when she shared that her withdrawal was based on her mental– not physical– health.

In a world where we condemn “quitters” as being weak, sometimes we fail to see how much strength it requires to know when to go back in a gesture that says, “Im not OK, but Im working on it.”.

And for that, Simones strong choice should have every bit as much applause as a gold medal would have.

” Put psychological health initially,” she said. “Its all right in some cases to even remain the huge competitions to concentrate on yourself due to the fact that it demonstrates how strong of a competitor and person you really are.”.

Thank you for your awareness of the state of your heart and mind, and for running the risk of uncertainty.

And to that, I simply wish to say thank you, Simone..

Thank you for your bravery..
