For his part, Poirier wasnt looking to get into an exchange with Covington and fact be told hes been locking out all social networks in the weeks leading into his fight versus Conor McGregor on Saturday night.
” Ive really been off of social networks for like the last month,” Poirier explained. “I have a team that runs it for me and puts captions to posts and photos and things like that. Im attempting to be far from it, simply to get away from all the negativity.
” As I was sitting here waiting for these interviews to start, I selected up my phone and saw that the video was out and I resembled let me simply let individuals know that this guy was a professional fighter. It wasnt an amateur fighter or something like that. Other than that, its all good, its whatever. Its just sound.”
I dont want people to believe this is an amateur kid or something like that,” Poirier stated.” Ive actually been off of social media for like the last month,” Poirier described. Im trying to be away from it, just to get away from all the negativeness.
” As I was sitting here waiting for these interviews to start, I picked up my phone and saw that the video was out and I was like let me simply let people know that this man was a professional fighter.
The always outspoken welterweight competitor will be sorely dissatisfied if Colby Covington was trying to get under Dustin Poiriers skin ahead of his battle at UFC 264.
On Tuesday, Covington released a short 15-second clip that showed Poirier dropping a training partner during a sparring session at American Top Team in Florida.
Initially, Covington called Poiriers sparring partner an amateur but he later on changed that declaration stating “the person without any headgear, wrestling credentials or brain cells left is Khabib” as he hinted this was a training session from the training camp to face Khabib Nurmagomedov in 2019.
In action, Poirier published on Twitter that the colleague he was dealing with was an expert fighter with a deep resume, who was later revealed as Titan FC veteran Felipe Douglas. Poirier then provided more response to the video launched when attending to Covington during an interview with UFC Arabia.
” Thats why I kind of put that out there. I dont want individuals to think this is an amateur kid or something like that,” Poirier said. “That was an expert fighter. I indicate thats what happens in gyms during difficult sparring, genuine sparring.
” Theres times where you drill and train and things like that. Theres times where you do tough sparring and that was a difficult sparring session. It is what it is.”
As much as Covington might have been attempting to make Poirier look bad with the sparring video footage launched, many fighters concerned his defense while explaining that the video didnt look like anything various than you d see in many high profile combined martial arts health clubs around the world.
Fellow American Top Team fighter Jorge Masvidal added to the conversation by asking Covington to also release the sparring video that shows him being dropped with a body shot delivered by Poirier.
